University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences's Bequest Language

An excellent way for you to support the mission of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is with a bequest in your will or living trust. One significant benefit of making a gift by bequest is that it allows you to create a meaningful plan for your gift without affecting your cash flow during your lifetime.  The same is true if you name us as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, a life insurance policy, a bank account or a security.  Thank you for wanting to make a difference and we hope you will consider leaving a lasting legacy to advance education, health care and research for future generations.

Please make all bequests to “The University of Arkansas Foundation, Inc. for the benefit of UAMS.”  The University of Arkansas Foundation, Inc. is the 501c3 tax-exempt foundation that accepts and invests gifts for the benefit of UAMS.

Bequest Benefits
A bequest is generally a revocable gift, which means it can be changed or modified at any time. You can choose to designate that a bequest be used for a general or specific purpose.

Bequest Language
In order to make a bequest, your attorney can help you include a bequest in your will or other estate planning documents. We have provided some basic bequest language to assist you and your attorney:

Bequest of a Specific Dollar Amount
I hereby give, devise and bequeath the sum of _________ dollars ($ ________) to The University of Arkansas Foundation, Inc. for the benefit of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, a nonprofit organization located at 4301 W. Markham Street, # 716, Little Rock, AR, 72205, for UAMS’ general use and purposes.

Percentage Bequest
I hereby give, devise and bequeath ____ percent (___%) of my total estate to The University of Arkansas Foundation, Inc. for the benefit of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, a nonprofit organization located at 4301 W. Markham Street, # 716, Little Rock, AR, 72205, for UAMS’ general use and purposes.

Residuary Bequest
I hereby give, devise and bequeath to The University of Arkansas Foundation, Inc. for the benefit of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, a nonprofit organization located at 4301 W. Markham Street, # 716, Little Rock, AR, 72205, for UAMS’s general use and purpose, ALL (OR ____ PERCENTAGE) of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate to be used for UAMS’ general use and purposes.

Restricted Bequests
Bequests that allow the gift to be used for UAMS’ general use and purposes are especially helpful as it allows UAMS to direct resources where the needs are the greatest.  However, we are grateful for gifts that designate a specific purpose (a restricted bequest) to advance the UAMS mission, such as supporting a specific program.  If you are considering a bequest, but you wish for your bequest to be used for a specific purpose, please let us know. We will be happy to work with you and your attorney to provide the exact language needed to make a bequest to any College, Institute, or other area or program at UAMS.

If you are making a restricted bequest, we recommend that your attorney include the following provision in your estate planning document to provide the flexibility that may be necessary should the specific purpose or program you designate cease to exist, no longer needs funding, or for other similar reasons, it is no longer possible or feasible for UAMS to use your gift as you originally intended:

“I give, devise and bequeath ___________________________ [insert gift] to The University of Arkansas Foundation, Inc. for the benefit of the ______________________________________ program of the __________________Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, for so long as UAMS determines that the program exists or needs funding. Should UAMS determine in its sole discretion that the need or the program no longer exists or that it is impossible or impracticable to use this bequest to accomplish the specific purposes stated herein, UAMS may use my gift, and the income and principal of this gift, for such purposes as UAMS determines is most closely related as possible to the restricted purpose I have stated above in my bequest."
